Celebrating Birthdays!

The boys did not have a chance to show off their new birthday present (the Wii) to their friends, so after all the family left we invited their friends over for snacks and game time.  We had hot dogs, burgers, decorating cupcakes, and caramel apples.  The boys had a Lego building contest and lots and lots of time on the Wii.  It was a great day!

Sarah's best friend, Hannah, is celebrating her birthday tomorrow - so since she was at our house Sarah took the opportunity to give Hannah the birthday present she bought for her.  They are really long socks that look like converse tennis shoes.

Tiger Scout Field Trip to the Farm

One of the requirments to earn the Tiger rank is to visit a farm - the boys had a great time seeing the cows, the fields, and the rest of the farm.  They made butter from cream and ate it on muffins.  One of their favorite parts was seeing the big pile of poop getting shoveled out of the barn.

Cub Scout Skating Night

The boys have so much fun whenever we go to the skating rink.  Noah is getting so much better, and Micah isn't as scared anymore.

High School Biology

Sarah is taking a biology course this year.  She has a DVD course, but does the labs on her own.  She usually waits for Saturdays so that Rob can be here while I hide out in the basement.  Ewwwwwwww.  On today's cutting board: a Sheep's BRAIN.....  I am not going to post every dissection lab she has, but thought I would at least show off her mad cutting skills at least once.  Plus, she looks SO cute in goggles, how could I resist?

The boys were ALL over a brain being cut up on our kitchen table.  It was good for Sarah, too, having to explain to them what she was doing helped enforce what she was learning.

Rob came on the seen and said, "OOOOOO, let's poke it!"

All done!  Brain cut up?  CHECK!

Bernkastel-Kues

On Rolfy's last day in Germany with us we spent a lovely day in the village of Bernkastel-Kues.  We walked around the quaint little town then hiked up to the castle ruins and ate in the resturant.

We spent Rolfy's last night eating popcorn, drinking wine we bought from a winery in Bernkastel-Kues, and playing one last game of Star Wars DVD Trivial Pursuit.

Burg Eltz

Today we took Rolfy to Burg Eltz, one of the most picturesque castles and only about and hour and a half from our house.  We took the castle tour and ducked into the little snack shop for french fries and hot chocolate during a rain shower.  We had a great time hiking to and from the castle along the paths.

the castle sit along the Eltz river and we took a walk down to the river to skip stones for a while.
a very nice comtemplative shot of my brother with castle Eltz in the background.

Hiking back

On the hike back I asked Noah to hold my purse because I wanted to have my picture taken with Rob, so then my brother thought it would be funny to hang Noah EVERYTHING that anyone was carrying.

Silliness with Uncle Rolf.

Cub Adventure Day

Today was just another crazy day in the Murphy house!  Sarah had a dance camp, Noah had a boy scout day camp, Micah had a cub adventure day with Daddy, and Krissie and her brother took off to the Homburg flea market then to Heidleburg castle.  We only had one camera so we only have pictures from the Cub Adventure Day.

Micah's turn to run the obstacle course!

Here is the part Micah was MOST looking foreward to!  Usually the cub scouts have a week long summer camp where they get to shoot BBguns and learn archery, this year (the first year Micah would have been able to attend as a scout and not be in the "tot lot") they did NOT have the camp due to lack of volunteers and Micah was so dissappointed!  This cub adventure day was just the trick!  Micah got to FINALLY fire a BBgun after watching Noah do it for 5 years!  He even hit the target!  Now he can not wait for summer!

Burg Rheinfels, St. Goar

I think this was our favorite day trip!  This castle is AMAZING!  It has huge ruins, underground tunnels, hiding places, lookouts, towers, EVERYTHING, including unlimited access!  There are some places (underground mine tunnels) that are pitch black and can only be walked through in a hunched over position.  Daddy, Uncle Rolf, and the 3 kids braved their way into these tunnels while Mom sat outside with Phantom.  Dad and Rolf were a little worried down there because it is pitch black and winding, turning, and full of dead ends.  They didn't make it "through", but they were able to turn around and find their way back out the same way they came even though they got a little turned around down there.

Sword fighting in the castle court yard

There were some tunnels and winding staircases that led up to this section of the castle, I tried to take the picture at an angle so you could grasp how high up the boys are.

Rolfy posing on the highest tower, with his faithful Rick Steves book in his hand.  We went no where without it, although it wasn't too helpful in the pitch black mine tunnels.

Exploring some of the cracks and crevices in the cave, this place was actually once the guard sleeping quarters and was almost pitch black in broad daylight, but my flash helped to shine (blind) a little light to take the picture.

cool castle photos

We ate at the restaurant on the castle grounds.  This is the platter my brother ordered (YUMMM!!)  Noah also ate an adult size portion of spaghetti (the waiter said, "are you sure you don't want the kiddie size?", Noah said, "Exploring makes you HUNGRY!")

Before heading home we traveled down the Rhine looking at all the other castles that can be seen on this particular stretch of road.  We stopped in the VERY picturesque village of Bacharach, famous for their wine, to sample and walk around the quaint little town.

Trier

Today's historic site was the beautiful city of Trier.  We spent all day walking around the oldest city in Germany. So much walking, but boy, we saw everything humanly possible to see in one day in that city.
(above) walking around inside the Porta Nigra.

I had fallen so far behind on my blog, so now I have these pictures of really cool Roman stuff from Trier but I can not remember what they were or what the history is.  Plus, it was a lot of walking and it was getting late... Sorry.  Good day, though!

For my brother, he knows why.  Get it?
