What we did on Saturday

Today Rob had to run TWENTY MILES as part of his marathon training, and Sarah was babysitting 2 of her very favorite little girls, Anne and Lydia, at our house. The 5 kids, the puppy, and Mom took a walk on the same trail that Dad was training on. We crossed paths at his 10 mile mark and his 12 mile mark. Phantom was so excited and surprised to suddenly see him along the trail!! 20 Miles was HARD and Rob came home, ate a huge plate of spaghetti and meatballs and slept for 2 hours. Then we all (5 kids, puppy, mom, and dad) got ready to head over to our friends house for a Labor Day BBQ, and celebration of Rob's promotion. What a great time we had! A lot of people from Rob's work came to help him celebrate as well as most of our church family. We said a prayer and sang a rousing chorus of "Happy Promotion to You" for Rob. We all had a great time and are very thankful for such great friends over here in Germany! On our walk, little Anne has all 3 of my kids wrapped around her little finger, and she is especially fond of them too. When the boys would run ahead on the walk she would call them back, "Boys!! Boys!!!". Lydia is in the stroller. She was a little warm and didn't have an appetite, but wasn't fussy at all. By the end of the night when we met up with their mom at the BBQ little Lydia had a 105 fever!! Mom took her home and she was better after a good nights sleep. YOU'RE HERE, YOU'RE HERE!! I never thought I'd see you again!!! (,says Phantom)

Rob's promotion to Tech. Sgt

Rob will pin on his new rank (E6) Sept. 1st. They have the promotion ceremony on the last day of the month, which is today because of the long weekend. Tradition dictates that someone higher ranking or a family member will help "tack on" the extra stripe.... which usually involves punching. Rob had his kids come up and tack on his new rank. Look at Noah! (above) he is all kinds of ready to help Rob on with that new stripe!! Rob is quite happy (mostly just to be able to take his dress blues off now!

Castle Tour Field Trip

Today we took a field trip to a nearby castle. We had a tour and a picnic. The weather was beautiful!! The kids just had haircuts today too! Look at Phantom, I caught him mid-bark. It was a really fun day, but there aren't a lot of great pictures, just kids on the tour and kids playing at the picnic... so I thought I would just share this picture of the kids with their new hair cuts.

A walk in a Gorge

Today we took a walk out in Karl's Valley with a few other home school families. Karl's Valley is one of the most beautiful places to take a walk in the Palatinate Forest. It is, in fact, perhaps THE most beautiful rambling kilometre in the entire forest. The path leads along the banks of a winding stream where now and again wooden bridges allow you to cross to the other side, and benches offer you the opportunity to sit down and relax awhile. The wooden pavilion at the half-way stage of the gorge is a very popular spot for taking photographs, but also for listening to the water rushing by. The picture above is as we entered the gorge, and below is just one of the many picturesque scenes we encountered along the way.The younger kids enjoyed climbing the hills and giant rock formations, crossing the river, and playing on fallen trees along the way. Sarah and her friend, Hannah, preferred to chat and hang out with their puppies. On the way back we took the "high road". This picture (above) is looking down into the gorge.
The walk is a big loop and at the entrance/exit there is a restaurant with a giant yard. The yard has a playground and assorted animals. Phantom could NOT figure out what this goat was!

a Puppy Reunion

The Breeders who sold us our Phantom had a ONE YEAR REUNION for the A-Litter. Five of the Seven Puppies came to share in the fun. They couldn't bring the Mom because she just had her second litter and was home with her 3-week old puppies!! They did bring their new puppy, Happy (no relation), who Phantom LOVED playing with. He had no interest in his brothers or sister, but he sure did like that 7-month old Happy puppy. We ate at a restaurant and then walked to a filed so the puppies could play for a little while. We are the only American buyers, but some of the owners spoke English, so we were able to communicate. I know these pictures can not even begin to show you the cuteness of the day! But I think you can see that Phantom isn't the biggest dog, and how much they all look alike. Phantom sure did look the leanest and strongest, probably from all those 5-mile runs with Rob. Here is Phantom and Happy
Here are the 5 puppies at their owners feet.
This is when Phantom first met his older brother, LOOK, they're hugging hello!!

Her is the mass playing in the field. Phantom is the only one with a blue collar, on the left hand side.

A Field Trip into the PAST!

We went on a field trip today. The field trip was to the biosphaerenhaus Since we went on this field trip 3 years ago (about 4 months after our arrival in Germany) I thought it might be fun to do a comparative blog post.... then and now.

Sarah had just turned 10 when we got here. Now she is a 13 year old young lady never a stones throw from a friend.

Noah was about to turn 7 in this picture and now he is about to turn 10. It's hard to imagine that he is now the same age as Sarah when we first arrived here.

Micah was just a little guy when we first got here and was so scared of crossing this little bridge. Now here he is, almost 6 and climbing up all on his own and running across that bridge again and again. Look at that smug look on his face. ThenNow

We had a great time yesterday, the kids had a lot more fun this time on the tree-top walk. The weather was beautiful. You can see all 60 pictures from today's field trip on Facebook.

Busy Weekend!

We had a busy weekend! Noah participated in his first scouting event as a WEBLO (the level of scouting he achieved as a 4th grader)! The event was a bicycle round-up / Camp-out. He learned all about bike maintenance, bike safety, trail riding, and had to navigate an obstacle course. Micah had fun jumping in the bouncy castle with all the younger siblings. Sarah went PAINTBALLING for a friend's birthday party, and then to a sleepover. Sarah is wearing one of her Dad's old uniforms..... it's a little de ja vu for me!!!!

New Camera Pictures

this summer has been keeping us busy at our usual haunts: Dino Park, Chili's, Trampoline, ect. I have been snappin' tons of pictures, but it has been a challenge trying to figure out how to get the new camera to "talk" to our computer and ancient PaintShop Pro software. Anyway, here are a few shots of random summer things as I try out the different bells and whistles on my camera. I am trying to learn all about the manual focus feature, ISO settings, Raw vs. other settings..... I need to just take a class....
